Today we put the spotlight on butyric acid – a powerful attractant every feeder and fixed rod angler should know. What is it, why does it work, and how do you use it? Read on and discover how to make your fishing spot irresistible! 💪
What exactly is butyric acid? 🧪
Butyric acid (or butanoic acid) is a substance with a strong, unique smell. It may seem a bit odd to us, but for fish – like roach, bream, and carp – it’s pure magic! ✨ It mimics natural food scents and draws them from afar to your bait spot.
Why does it work? 🐟
Fish have an excellent sense of smell, and butyric acid taps into that perfectly. The scent spreads rapidly in the water and even makes lazy fish hungry. Whether you fish with a feeder or fixed rod, butyric acid gives you a serious advantage! 🚀
🔬 Scientifically proven attraction mechanism:
Butyric acid has a very penetrating odor that fish can detect as a food signal. It mimics fermentation processes that also occur in rotting plants or seeds – something carp, bream, and others naturally respond to.
Additionally, fish like carp can detect subtle pH changes in their environment through their taste and smell senses. By creating a slightly acidic zone around your hook bait, you arouse curiosity or mimic a "food hotspot."
⚠️ Beware of overdosing:
Using too much butyric acid lowers the pH so much that it feels unnatural or even threatening to the fish. Less is more!
How do you use butyric acid? 🎯
It’s super simple, but dosing is important:
How much?
Use 2-3 ml per kilo of groundbait, pellets, corn, particles... Too much can scare fish away, so keep it subtle.
Application:
Mix into groundbait, add to your pellets, or put a few drops on your expanders for an extra kick. Also works perfectly in dips and spod mixes for carp fishing.
💡 Competition tip:
During a pairs competition, I was getting bites non-stop. Until my fishing partner opened the jar of butyric acid and dipped his bait – suddenly my bites stopped and he was full of action. Coincidence? I don’t think so 😄
Extra tip: Mask the smell! 🌶️
Butyric acid works great, but that intense smell can be a bit overwhelming at the waterside. Combine it with our Captura Baits Bait Booster Spice Garlic to mask the sharp odor with a powerful garlic twist. Or use the Captura Baits Flavour Spice Garlic – just a few drops and you get the perfect balance between attraction for fish and comfort for yourself! 😊
A catch to brag about 🎉
A customer from Friesland tried butyric acid last season in his feeder mix. Result? Within two hours he had a net full of bream and a smile from ear to ear.
“This stuff is worth its weight in gold,” he told us afterward.

PS: This is 100% pure butyric acid. How do you know for sure?
Pure butyric acid smells, but it really stinks only when mixed with other matter or comes into contact. So be careful not to drop a single drop in the living room... 🤦♂️
